The Pre-Diploma course is a
Certificate IV Higher Education Preparation Studies
(Commerce Stream) program. It is ideal preparation for further
studies at diploma or first year university level.
It is the equivalent of Year 12 on the Australian
Qualifications Framework.
Successful completion of the Certificate IV course
provides a guaranteed place in either of Canning's
Diploma of Commerce courses. Successful applicants
can also apply for first year undergraduate entry to a
range of courses at Curtin University of Technology,
Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University.
Student wanting admission to UWA do so through
completion of Canning's Diploma of Commerce: UWA Stream.

Unit Descriptions
Accounting CT16
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
This unit is focused on recording, processing and
analysing financial information in a business context.
It aims to help students develop an appreciation of the
factors underpinning financial decision-making. It uses
a problem-solving approach to help students evaluate and
make critical decisions about business finances.
Economics CT17
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
This unit introduces students to the key concepts,
understandings and methodology of economics. It seeks to
assist students to develop competence in critically
interpreting economic information (written, graphical
and tabular) and to discuss economic issues. The focus
is on economic theories in preparation for further
studies in the discipline.
English Communication CT11A, CT11B
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
The English Communication units are delivered over two
terms. These units are independent of each other. Key
aspects of research and written communication skills are
covered as well as aural and oral communication skills.
The focus of content in these units is on Australian
culture so as to provide students with a more complete
view of the environment in which they are living and
studying.
Information Technology CT13
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
This unit enables students to understand and use the
Microsoft Office suite of software to complete learning
tasks. Students will come to appreciate the
functionality of computers and the manner in which they
interface with networks. A major focus of the unit is
the development of research and presentation strategies
through use of the internet.
Legal Studies CT14
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
The main aim of this unit is to increase students’
awareness and understanding of the Australian legal
system. In particular, the unit focuses on: The system
of law applicable in Australia; the sources of
Australian law; and the operation of the Australian
court system. As such, the emphasis of this unit is on
the origins and development of the Australian legal
system.
Management CT15
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
This unit draws attention to the theory and practice of
organisational management in business and commercial
contexts. It uses a case-study approach toward studying
the evolution of management and its roles and functions.
The emphasis in this unit is on developing student
capabilities regarding basic terminology, concepts and
principles associate with the field.
Marketing CT18
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
This unit provides an introduction as to the relevance
of marketing products at a domestic and international
level. Whilst the key emphasis is placed on the role of
marketing in business and commercial contexts, the unit
also highlights the importance of marketing concepts for
consumers of goods and services. On completing the unit,
students will have an understanding of central marketing
concepts, principles and terminology.
Mathematics CT12A, CT12B
Contact Hours: 5 Hour Seminar per week
The mathematics units (as with English Communication)
are delivered over two terms. These units are
independent of each other. They aim to introduce and/or
consolidate key understandings regarding mathematics
particularly where these relate to the use of statistics
in business and commercial settings. They take a
problem-solving approach toward developing mathematical
proficiency for studying business statistics at the
undergraduate level.
